Sexuality takes many forms, with the the object of desire also reflecting this multiplicity. For some individuals sexual desire, sexual relationships and romantic feelings can be directed toward objects, including buildings and in this case, cars. An article recently appeared on "Edward Smith, who lives with his current "girlfriend" – a white Volkswagen Beetle named Vanilla. Mr Smith, 57, first had sex with a car at the age of 15, and claims he has never been attracted to women or men." While he has had sexual relationships with women in the past the attraction did not mimic that found with cars. While he is currently in relationship with Vanilla it is an open relationship and he has other physical relationships with other vehicles, many of which he does not own himself. He was recently filmed for a documentary on mechaphilia, a sexual attraction to mechanical objects such as bicycles, cars, planes etc

Smith is not the only example of a OS or Objectum-Sexual, many other individuals have felt strong romantic and sexual feelings towards objects. The clearest explanation I have encountered asked non OS individuals to touch the outside of a building, which at first would feel cold, causing the sensation of temperature in your hand. As your hand rest on the wall it would gradually warm as would the material you were touching. The argument is that this type of "transfer" indicates the capacity of the object to interact with the individual.

Many OS individuals have love affairs with well buildings and architectural icons such as the Berlin Wall and the Eiffle Tower. For instance, Eija-Ruta Eklaf was married to the Berlin Wall.
